What is corruption?

Corruption is the abuse of a position of trust in a function in administration, business or politics in order to gain an advantage to which there is no legally justified claim.

Every year, corruption causes considerable damage - not only materially, but also immaterially. Corruption endangers the social and democratic order of our society by violating the principles of equality before the law, impartiality in the conduct of public administration and fair competition in the free economy, and by promoting a non-transparent economy based on privilege. This destroys trust in the state and the economy. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is countering the corruptive networks with an anti-corruption network. In addition to the competent criminal investigation departments of the district police authorities and the focal public prosecutor's offices, the tax investigation departments and the antitrust authorities are particularly worthy of mention here.
